How To Restore Old JDM Wheels? The Ultimate Refinishing Guide!

Have you ever considered rescuing faded rims from the scrapyard? Reviving classic JDM Wheels demands patience, correct tools, and precision. Restoring these legendary automotive pieces brings immense satisfaction. Follow our comprehensive steps below for stripping, sanding, painting, and finally sealing your customized garage project successfully.

Core Highlights

  • Chemical strip – not blast:Chemically stripping, rather than sand blasting, is essential to keep from pitting soft aluminum alloys when restoring 3-piece JDM wheels.
  • Torque Specs:The reassembly torque is M7: 22-25 ft-lbs, and M8: 28-32 ft-lbs, which should always be assembled in a star pattern.
  • Sealing:The seal is leak-proof when the old silicone is painstakingly removed, and a bead of Dow Corning 732 or 733 silicone is carefully finger-smeared.
  • Preparation is everything:The number one cause for failure? Hurrying up on preparation. I have witnessed freshly polished lips getting hairline bubbles due to one speck of old RTV being left behind. Maddening. We’re going to take this slowly.

The Build & Prerequisites

How To Restore Old JDM Wheels?

  • The ultimate goal is to get a turnkey setup mated to tires, fit with air, and get many heads turning at any classic Japanese car meet in the USA. You will build a full set of period-correct JDM wheels with centered finishings, mirror-polished lips, and a completely new hardware set.
  • Prerequisites aren’t crazy; a fairly good garage or shed is required. There are a fair amount of SSR wheels that employ a 12-point fastener and have a special socket you have to search online for. If it isn’t available, carefully put the project away. When I rounded two bolts off a set of SSR Mesh, a $200 extraction bill was forthcoming.
  • Plan ahead for new hardware kits, at $200-$400 USD per kit, if the existing ones are pitted. Recycled use of crusty bolts is out of the question because they fracture under stress. If skipping restoration entirely, sourcing White TE37 Style Wheelsremains an excellent alternative.

Re-specing Lips and Barrels

Many DIYers pick up larger lips to get a deeper dish, then figure out the new offset extends the wheel 15mm out from the fender. Check your inner and outer clearance with the tire installed before ordering new barrels. A 3mm calculation error can make your dream come to a rub fest.

Restore Damaged Wheels – The Comprehensive Guide

Restore Damaged Wheels - The Comprehensive Guide

The process is the same for rebuilding modular 3-piece wheels as well as providing rejuvenation to cast wheels in solid condition. For the full story from start to finish, we will use a set of classic 1-piece cast aluminum wheels as our central case study, applying the more complex 3-piece teardown rules as needed.

Step 1. Initial Assessment And Project Planning

To apply chemical strippers or abrasives, you need to know how your wheel is built. Cast and forged aluminum behave very differently when it comes to heat and abrasion.

Wheel MaterialCore CharacteristicCommon Repair Strategy
Cast AluminumProne to stress fractures under heatHigh-quality epoxy fillers (e.g., Bondo)
Forged AluminumExtremely high structural strengthTIG welding with 4043 filler rod

These are the OEM 16” x 7.5″ Honda S2000 aluminum wheels which I will be restoring today. They’re made in Japan by Enkei. They’re popular, but I found this set for $120 on Craigslist as they’re in rough shape and have no tires.

The Core Strategy

  • Sand the failed clear coat: Sand the failed clear coat.
  • Fill in the curb-gouged edges: Fill in the curb-gouged edges.
  • Prime the natural bases, paint, and clear coat: Prime the natural bases, paint, and clear coat.

Step 2. Disassembly & First Sanding

Modular Wheels

Place the face of the 3-piece wheels down on a thick moving blanket. Paint a degree mark on every seam to identify where each seam should be set when reassembling, to clock it exactly as it originally was.

Loosen all bolts in an “X” pattern with the correct breaker bar, yet don’t completely remove them; simply reduce the torque. Completely clear the bolts and use a rubber mallet to tap from the rear.

The Monoblock

We don’t use any bolts in our 1-piece Enkeis. Except for the poorly painted one, all are chewed up from curbs. I will begin to hit the edges with 180-grit sandpaper, replacing that rugged verge.

Step 3. Deep Cleaning And Degreasing

3-Piece Stripping Chemicals

For 3-piece lips that have been separated, use a stripper gel with a benzyl alcohol base. Allow it to stand for 20 minutes, scrape off goop with a plastic scraper, and wash away with water. To remove anodizing, brush the anodized surface with Easy-Off oven cleaner, allow foaming for about 15 minutes, and neutralize by brushing with baking soda.

Monoblocks Pre-Filler Prep

Chemical strippers do not always have to be used for cast Enkeis if you are painting over a prepped surface. I’m going to take all the oil and grease off with DupliColor Prep-Spray (any grease and wax removal spray will work), then fill in the gouges. After a good spray and wipe down, I’ll let it dry.

Step 4. Edge Repair & Curb Rash Management

When it comes to 3-piece forged lips, 5mm can be sanded away. If the damage is deeper, TIG Welding must be performed using a 4043 Filler Rod. The welder will lay the bead down, and you will use a file to shape it.

Epoxy fillers are common practice for 1-piece cast wheels. Bondo comes in two parts as a filling compound; after mixing the components, you will have a few minutes to use it before it dries.

When cured, it is extremely durable and can be sanded and painted. Wear gloves and fill in the deep pits and scratches! I want to have a nice even edge as opposed to the chewed-up aluminum resulting from the bad parking skills of the prior owner. Many enthusiasts match these repairs to standards seen on Rizo 5104F BBS Style 18 Wheels.

Step 5. Application And Drying

When working on four wheels at once, it is essential to act efficiently. While I’ve been filling the other wheels, my partner has been wet sanding the blue wheels. She is using a fine grit to roughen the surface for applying primer and paint; they do not require any body filler.

The next task is to clean up these wheels from any dust, dirt, or oil while the Bondo cures. I’m going to let the Bondo sit for at least 30 minutes before I touch it. I wish to make a smooth edge, so I will use 320-grade sandpaper. Sanding is a dusty task—use a sanding mask! Sand until you have smooth edges.

You can spend a lot of time making these perfect, but I’m thinking this is sufficient since I will be using these wheels on my CR-V off-road. Rinse the dust out with soap and water, and allow them to dry.

Step 6. Primer Application And Surface Leveling

For good adhesion, apply a special automotive primer that can plug the micro-abrasions caused by the 320-grit paper. I’ll be using this Duplicolor Filler primer as my base to take on the light surface scratches throughout these wheels. After applying 2 heavy coats and 3 light coats of the primer, the wheels are ready. Of course, this primer will sand too; if I’m not happy with the surface, I can add more sanding.

Step 7. Face And Nooks Painting

Single-stage urethane is available in themed shades, such as Nissan Mica Red or Honda Championship White, and is best suited for heritage 3-piece builds.

For our monoblocks, it’s time for paint! The colour I am thinking of using is white DupliColor Wheel coating because it will make a strong contrast with my “electric blue pearl” CR-V, though silver or gunmetal would be interesting colours too.

You might want a finish that rivals factory Rizo 5103F BBS Style Forged Wheels. It is possible to use lower quality paint, but if you don’t want to redo this later, be careful about it.

I purchased 2 cans of paint for the 4 wheels. With these first few coats, I’m paying attention to the nooks and edges lightly, but not so much the face of the wheel.

Step 8. High Grit Wet Sanding For The Perfect Finish

When paint is applied too thick, “orange peel” will result—a poor, textured surface finish. I put on 2 more heavier coats of white paint, carefully avoiding drips. Next, I am going to wet sand with 2000-grit to get the best possible finish.

Alternative to the 3-Piece Mirror Polish

For three-piece bare lips, polish in the same direction through 1500, 2000, and 3000-grit sanding paper. Dry and examine it as you go to make sure it is free of scratching. Once at 3000-grit, use a wool pad attached to a drill with a brown tripoli drill compound, then lastly use a loose cotton wheel with a white rogue compound.

Step 9. Clear Coat Application & Sealing

Clear coating is used with painted monoblocks to retain the colour and prevent brake dust corrosion. I finish off with 4 coats of Duplicolor wheel matte clearcoat. This need not occur, but it will impact the longevity of this paint.

Three-Piece Reassembly and Sealing

If finishing three-piece wheels, reassembly occurs here. Use acetone to clean the mating surfaces. Put a bead of Dow Corning 732 (clear) or 733 (black) around the back of the lip flange without smudging. Put it in the groove and leave a 1mm film. All bolts are to be hand-tightened and torqued in a star pattern.

Hardware SizeRecommended Torque SpecTightening Pattern
M7 Bolts22 – 25 ft-lbsStar / Crisscross
M8 Bolts28 – 32 ft-lbsStar / Crisscross

Allow sealed wheels to dry for 24-48 hours.

Step 10. Final Fitment And Tire Mounting

Care is needed when mounting tires on freshly painted or sealed wheels. The clear coat is dry, so I’m dropping these wheels off at the tire shop where I have already ordered Toyo Open-Country A/T 215/70/16 tires. I don’t want to spend many hours in a tire shop lobby, so I drop the wheels off, come back the next day, and install them at home.

The whole makeover is giving the auto an entirely different perspective. With some 76mm Honda centre caps on hand, I think this will be the turn-headiest 2001 Honda CR-V in town. Alternatively, if you want a modern Audi aesthetic, consider the Rizo 626F 18-20 Forged Wheels. Thanks for reading!

Verification: Leak Testing

When buying 3-piece wheels, verification is essential prior to securing highway clearance. Assemble the wheel, charge it to approximately 40 psi, and then submerge it in a water tub or spray all seams with a soap solution. Check for bubbles that may signify a leak.

Fill a large plastic container with water and slowly submerge the wheel. Take note of the barrel to lip seam and bolt heads. If there is a continuous flow of very small bubbles, this joint should be disassembled and resealed. I have had one that bubbled from one bolt hole because I missed spotting a tiny bit of old silicon under that flange. Be thorough.

If the test is okay, retighten the tire and reinflate to specifications. After 24 hours, re-check all bolt torques, then re-check after 100 miles of driving. The gasket can give a little, indicating a loss of torque in the range of 3-5 ft-lbs. Retighten to spec.

How To Restore Old JDM Wheels? The Ultimate Refinishing Guide!

You will now have a set of wheels with true history and your own sweat. Polish the lips and add a high-temp ceramic coating to stop oxidation. Raw aluminum should be protected against American road salts and brake dust, or it will haze in weeks.

Order proper valve stems. Sometimes the stem is too long on JDM wheels and will need to be shortened to clear the brake calipers.

Document everything. If you ever sell, a photo album of the restoration will comprise huge value and makes establishing authenticity possible. Maintaining the original polish and tone for a vintage car is important.

However, if you trust your shop, a proper low-temp powder coat on centers is good to go if you stack the priorities. This is something no new wheel can replicate. If you ever prefer a brand-new setup, explore options like the Rizo 7108F Customizable Forged Wheels.

People Also Ask

Will Paint Stripper Hurt JDM Wheels?

Yes, unless the strippers are the benzyl alcohol types. Using too much “methylene chloride stripper” will actually eat into the soft 1990s JDM aluminum. Apply, bubble, and scrape with plastic tools.

What Is The Professional Price To Restore JDM Wheels?

Depending on the level of damage, expect a price range of $600-$1,500 for a full set. That doesn’t usually come with new hardware, which costs $200-$400 for companies like SSR or Work.

Powder Coating Forged JDM Wheels – Is It Safe?

If the shop is using a low-temperature operation (less than 400°F), the temper of the aluminum will not change with repeated thermal cycles. Fatigue strength will decrease if the shop uses a high-temperature operation (above 400°F). Request catalogues detailing the products.

How To Make Wheel Lips Mirror Polished Without A Machine?

You can’t really. You would hardly ever get a true mirror without a drill-powered wool pad. A bright satin finish can be achieved by hand sanding to 3000 grit, but it is unpredictable. Mechanical speed and compound are required for final polish.

Why Are My Wheels Not Holding Air After Re-Assembling Them?

Nearly always, old silicone is left on the mating surface. Even a 1mm fragment creates a gap. Wash with acetone, sharpen with a razor blade if necessary, reapply sealant, and re-torque.

Which Sealant Is Best For 3-Piece JDM Wheels?

Multi-purpose silicone is used by many wheel builders, and Dow Corning 732 (clear) or 733 (black) is the staple. It cures flexible, remains watertight, and is not affected by extreme heat from tyres.
